Sonnet #2016, for North Carolina

Sonnet #2016

If Shakespeare saw beyond the mask of death
Sir Walter’s face stamped on this legal tryst,
I think he’d turn to Richard, to Macbeth,
to see what strain of tyranny he’d missed.
He could not understand the roots of power
so well as all the teachers have portrayed
yet be so speechless on this state of ours.
I think he’d stand aghast, his genius flayed.
He never dreamed the NC-GOP:
they obfuscate (his villains shared their aim),
obsess the body’s functions more than he,
defeat the stain of conscience, and proclaim
that none but love of country is their theme–
then leave the bill for Raleigh’s lost esteem.

The author of Snark on the Side is not your average run-of-the-millennial generation. Jen is a contradiction in terms: a graceful klutz, a smart blond, a math-savvy English degree-holder, a southern liberal, and an adult amateur equestrian who doesn’t match her saddle pads. Snark on the Side is a work in progress, born out of years of rambling email newsletters and anthropomorphized Christmas letters, small town observations, and the ever-present irony of pursuing a career with a degree in English literature. Thanks for visiting!
