So, now I can no longer tell the sounds my computer makes apart from either the air conditioning unit outside or the man with the leaf blower in the street.

Uh-oh. My old computer started doing that (AND it had to be open for the airport card to fit in it which made it worse). Deafening, and very annoying. :/You could get a Mac with a student discount perhaps? 🙂
It would have to be a gigantiwhoppinormous student discount. 🙂 It's still hobbling around, in the meantime.
Oh…nevermind! Yeah, it is still awfully expensive! Not much of a discount, but you do get a free iPod Touch, I guess that's the best part of the deal.
